Abstract
Mainport and hinterland under pressure: Competitive dynamics and port regionalization - the case of Antwerp/Belgium. This paper sheds light on the process of decentralisation of port related activities, a phenomenon that had already been conceptualised as "port regionalization" by NOTTEBOOM/ RODRIGUE (2005). This concept analyses the relocation of services or facilities out of core port areas and the emergence of wider network relations, in order to overcome negative externalities of agglomeration as a result of increased port competition and related concentration effects. Here it is applied in the case of Antwerp/Belgium, the second largest port in Europe based on commodity-throughput. Antwerp represents a particular case in this respect, since it deploys the issue of concentration versus de-concentration quite significantly. It also has a strong tradition as a concentrated mainport based on maritime services, industry and logistics. The paper follows different perspectives on this issue, i.e. a port- and a hinterland-related view. It contends that the port of Antwerp is seeking to improve the spatial development conditions and to maintain its competitive position by pursuing a strategy of moderate rather than excessive regionalization.
