Abstract
Since 1995 computational hydraulics were used in watermanagement in Flanders. Today nearly 2000 km of non-navigable watercourses and all navigable waterways have been modelled off-line. These hydrological and hydraulic models were first used for off line simulations and scenario analysis. Nowadays, these models are also also re-used for setting up flood forecasting systems. This paper describes two important operational pilot cases, i.e. the "Zeeschelde" forecasting system is the precursor of one large forecasting system for all navigable waterways at streamdistrict-scale and the "Operational Basin Model" (OBM) in the Demerbasin, which is a pilot-case for flood forecasting of the non-navigable watercourses at riverbasin-scale. Both systems are described in detail in this paper.
