Abundance of breeding birds. There are several initiatives in the Zeeschelde estuary with regard to breeding bird monitoring. Aim is to follow the evolution of the birds that breed along the Schelde, with emphasis on the breeding birds in the Special Protection Areas (SPAs) and marshes and polders. meer
1. Annual monitoring of breeding birds in the SPA called "Salt Marshes and Polders of the Lower Scheldt" and in the compensation areas for the Waaslandhaven (including Kruibeke, Bazel and Rupelmonde Polders). 2. Six-yearly monitoring of large salt marshes (Galgenschoor and Groot Buitenschoor on the right bank and Saeftinghe in the Netherlands) of the Lower (Sea) Scheldt as an extension of the above monitoring. 3. Breeding success: Spoonbill, Black-headed Gull, Mediterranean Gull. In addition to monitoring the number evolution of breeding birds, additional research is being carried out on the viability of the population since 2003. For several years, data is also available on the breeding success of the Common Tern. 4. Monitoring right bank (Opstalvalleigebied, Meeuwenbroedplaats, Kuifeend) - Territory mapping. 5. Blokkersdijk 6. Common breeding bird monitoring nature development - updated Sigma Plan. In the large salt marsh areas, breeding birds are monitored with extensive territorial mapping. Observations of brood birds are noted during the at least 7 field visits per breeding season. These data are translated into territorial maps. Areas in between are examined on random basis. Mapping includes at least all species applying to the conservation of bird species for the Zeeschelde estuary and all other Bird Directive listed species that may breed.
