Abstract
In situ dike breach experiments following overflow are considered within the framework of the realisation of the ‘Sigmaplan’ for the River Scheldt in Flanders. The first two experiments were executed in Lillo along the tidal river Scheldt in May 2012.

Four computational models were applied for simulating the Lillo A breach experiment, i.e. IWRS/HRBreach, Mike11, Verheij-van der Knaap and BRES-Visser. The main objective is a validation of their applicability for simulating breach growth in real-dikes. The input parameters of the models were chosen based on the characteristics observed and measured in the field as well as obtained from literature.

Numerical simulations show, that the selected computational models present different performances for the breaching experiment, due mainly to the intrinsic characteristics of the models. For instance, IWRS/HRBreach presents strong limitations that have a strong influence on breach calculations. Finally, it was observed that Mike 11 and Verheij-van der Knaap present relatively acceptable results for breaching experiment Lillo A.
