Abstract
The contours of the Pb-inventory in waters of the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian coast, the Belgian and Dutch Southern Bight coast and the German North Sea coast have been established from the voltammetric analysis of samples taken with a rather dense network of more than 400 stations. After some general methodological remarks on sampling, sample pretreatment, aspects for selection of differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry as trace analytical determination method and low temperature ashing by microwave induced oxygen plasma as digestion procedure for suspended particulate matter, the data for the different coastal regions are presented and discussed particularly with respect to the influence of hydrographic parameters and pollution sources on the respective Pb-levels. For the studied coastal zones in the Western Mediterranean and the Belgian/Dutch Southern Bight, data for the dissolved and particulate matter bound Pb-levels and the resulting total Pb-freight in the waters have been measured, while for the German North Sea Coast the discussion has to be based at present only on the already determined dissolved Pb-level and is therefore for this region somewhat preliminary. General characteristics of the different coastal areas are connected with the differences in the particulate matter content, usually very low in the studied Western Mediterranean coastal zone, and the substantially different hydrographic conditions in the various coastal regions studied. While tidal movements and currents are virtually absent in the Western Mediterranean they are an important and complicating parameter at the North Sea coast. Here they exert, due to different directions, pronounced and differing influences on the Pb-level along the Belgian/Dutch Southern Bight coast and the German North Sea Coast, respectively. In a final section some examples for specific local influences (big ports and estuaries) in the elsewhere rather stationary behaving Ligurian and Tyrrhenian coastal waters are described.
