Etymology Lagis is a feminine Greek given name. In Nordiska Hafs-Annulater Malmgren multiple times uses ancient Greek female names for new genera. In this case Lagis appears as the name of a courtesan in the work "The Deipnosophists of Athenaeus", while Lagisca (Polynoidae) as the name of a mistress appears in the preceeding sentence. [details]

Anterior rim of cephalic veil with numerous long cirri. Dorsal and lateral margins of semicircular operculum smooth, ventral margin with numerous notopodial paleae on each side. Comb-like branchiae on segments 3–4. Notopodia other than those of segment 1, which bear paleae, on segments 5–19 (15 pairs), with notochaetae. Neuropodia, 13 pairs, with transverse row of uncini, on segments 8–19. Uncini with more than two longitudinal rows of major teeth. Grammatical gender Lagis is feminine from an ancient Greek given name, Lagis. Malmgren's species name for the type species appears to be a genitive of a surname so is not helpful for indicating authorial intended gender. Claparède (1869) and Hartmann-Schröder (1959) added feminine adjectival names. More recent workers have added new species with suffixes that look masculine. Lagis crenulatus should be crenulata for gender agreement, but Lagis plurihamus can be treated as an unchanging noun in apposition, as can Lagis portus. [details]
