Brazil is a country with its energetic resources mainly located on hydroelectric power plants, both small and big sized plants. Although there is already a large number of plants on construction and also operating, Brazil still has an enormous potential to pro?t by the installation of more undertakings of this nature, specially because it is a very rich country regarding water resources. The objective of this study was to evaluate the e?ects of a dam installation on river water quality. It was adopted the case study of the Funil hydroelectric power plant constructed in Grande River, on the Paraná Basin, south region of Minas Gerais State. We searched to evaluate the e?ects resulted from the construction of the dam as well as those resulted from other factors that could also in?uence water quality, such as weather and climate, the use and occupation of the drainage basin, tributaries contribution, among others. We also assessed the possible implication of water quality alteration from the construction of the dam on the current and potential water usage, according to the current legislation. Therefore, four-monthly data were used - dry, intermediate and rainy seasons - from the monitoring of physicochemical, bacteriological and hydrobiological water quality parameters from six sampling stations, during the period of August 2001 to December 2009 (except 2004). Both numeric and graphic statistic analysis were taken, using the "Mann Whitney Test/U Test", with the total data grouped in two distinct scenarios: (1) without the construction of any dam and (2) after the construction of one. The results obtained allow us to conclude that the water quality parameters that su?ered a possible in?uence from the construction of the dam (p < 0,05 - Mann Whitney Test/U Test), considering one or more sampling stations, were the water conductivity, water hardness, water pH, sedimentable solids, total solids and temperature. Accordingly to gra?cal analysis, turbidity, chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus, orthophosphate, ammonium, phytoplankton (density and richness) and zooplankton (richness) were also possibly in?uenced by the construction of the dam. It was also veri?ed that there weren’t any implications on the water use resulting from these water quality alterations.
